Welcome to the EU-Speak website
EU-Speak will capture, celebrate & share local best practice in provision of second language (L2) teaching & professional training of tutors to immigrant adults at Basic User level (Common European Framework of Reference). Workshops will document and share findings of best practice across representative providers in Europe.
The wider partnership will comprise language professionals from HE/FE/voluntary sector ed. providers, vulnerable learners & individuals with low L2 oral skills & weak literacy in their 1st & 2nd languages (not funded by the project). We will work with representatives from local refugee/asylum seeker organisations.
Workshops, hosted by partner will:
- Focus on provision & training in L2 skills & on problems/solutions at local level.
- Explore unique learning experiences of vulnerable learners and work with members of local ethnic communities to gain a clearer picture of whether current pedagogical practices are successful for low oral proficiency/low literate learners & of how country of resettlement, local language & culture impact on progression towards social & economic inclusion.
Research tells us expansion of the supply of fiction available to low-literate adults is an area requiring considerably more attention. With Newcastle leading the way with knowledge gained from a 09/10 project we will share ideas with the aim of creating new reading materials in all partners’ languages to motivate immigrants to move more quickly towards independent reading through earlier expansion of basic reading skills.
No medium exists to work at EU level on local problems common to member states or share local/national best practice across Europe. EU-Speak will create a new network to continue beyond the life of our project. Final report June 2012.
